Spring Sap

March 22-23: NH Maple Syrup Producers Open-House Weekend - Because the weather did not cooperate, most of our local Sugarhouses were not boiling during the Open House weekend.  Many of these Sugarhouses; invite you to stop by when they are boiling during the month of April (and just maybe the last weekend of March)!
Spring will come to New Hampshire . . . yes, we still have snow on the ground and the temps are much too close to zero (or below) but our Maple Syrup producers are preparing for Maple season.  If the days get up in the 30's and 40's, then the sap starts running.  Many of our Maple Syrup producers welcome you to come visit them not only for the open-house weekend but during the whole season.  Visit their website to learn more about the Open-House weekend and find a producer near you:
http://www.nhmapleproducers.com/sugarhouses/index.html

Visit The Rocks Estate in Bethlehem for the Maple Experience
on March 15, 22-23, 29-30 and April 6; reservations are recommended.  Check out their website: http://nhmapleexperience.com for more information.  This is a hands-on experience: tap a tree, identify Sugar Maples, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, visit the interactive Maple Museum, tour the Sugarhouse and watch as syrup is made, taste maple syrup with the traditional sour pickle & donut, take in a cooking demonstration from one of our local chefs, and even enjoy a full home-made breakfast.

Hunt's Sugarhouse in Sugar Hill also welcomes you to watch them boil in the evenings and on weekends (dependent on the weather). Check out their facebook page for more information and to know when their maple season starts: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sugar-Hill-Maple-Farm/179715262074459?fref=ts

Check awardGrocers MagazineIn 2013, Vincent & Madeline Hansalik were awarded college scholarships from the New Hampshire Food Industry Education Foundation.  Mr. John Dumais, president of the NH Grocer's Association, came up to Harman's this summer to present their awards.  Vincent and Madeline were also featured in the industry's monthly magazine as 2 of the 56 winners.  Vincent is in his senior year at the University of New Hampshire and his sister, Madeline, is a freshman at Texas A&M.  We are extremely proud of both of them.  They have passed their Harman's employment "mantle" to their younger sister, Marianne, who is attending Profile High School.  Vincent and Madeline both helped me out during their Christmas break this year.

History of Harman's Cheese & Country Store in Sugar Hill New Hampshire

On September 17, 2013: we brought in our 2-year aged Cheddar and the 21,715 pounds filled our walk-in so we aren't able to reach the remaining blocks of 2010 Cheddar until spring.   As Disney says "it is going back in the vault" and in our case the vault is the "back of the walk-in cooler" and the 2010 Cheddar is there until March of 2014.
