Cheddar Pennies - Page 53
From: Mary Whitaker, John & Kate Harman's Niece
Beverly, Massachussetts

A great recipe with a wonderful glimpse into the life of the John Harman through his niece's eyes.

There's another twist to life. Mary Whitaker's nephew, David Roberts married a gal, named Nancy who has the nickname of Momma Nookie. Nancy has a cookie baking business in Lancaster, New Hampshire (www.MommaNookies.com) and she now bakes Harman's Cheese Balls (tasty cracker bites) for us. She uses our Cheese Ball Recipe but shapes them like Mary Whitaker's Cheddar Pennies. I think it's one of God's reminders of how we are all connected when the baker I find turns out to be a shirt-tail relative of Mr. Harman.

Painting the Store
- Pages 176-177 (Photo Link)

The Red Sox didn't make it into the World Series this year and maybe that saved me some sleep. My friend, Jean, wrote this great antidote about painting the store and Jean is permanently intertwined with the Red Sox in my head. Click on the link above and read her story . . . but mine follows below:

Jean is a die-hard Sox fan from Martha's Vineyard but has been living overseas for years so she is always craving news of the Sox and that isn't always easy to find in Nepal or China. I try and send her care packages of clippings a couple of times during the season but during the 2004 AL Championship I did a bit more.
If you remember that was the year of all years for the Red Sox. Jean was so frustrated because she'd go on the internet to get the news and the final score would be staring at her without any details so we worked out a deal. I e-mailed her the pitch by pitch details of the playoffs with the Yankees, complete with my own commentary and frustration. Jean would stay away from news and radio until the e-mails arrived and then would enjoy the details. I did my homework, too (or cheated) I'd start the e-mails before the games began with trivia bits for her about the players, etc that I had gleaned from the tv or papers then I'd just sit down and write the commentary inbetween all the trivia. If you are a Red Sox or Yankee fan, you'll remember that we were all blurry eyed the next day as those were long games. But it was all worth it to me, because Jean got to enjoy the game as it played out; my e-mails never gave away the ending because I never knew the ending until the last out of the last inning. The e-mails got quite long so I would hit send every so often.
Here's a taste of what Jean received back in October 2004! Remember I had to type while I was watching the game . . . things aren't perfect. As you can see even though Red Sox were ahead, I wasn't sure they'd win!

(This was the 7th game of the 2004 AL Championship against the Yankees, played at Yankee stadium)

On to the bottom of the 9th and score is 10-3. Yankees got the heart of their order up and both Matsui and Posada have been the ones that gave Red Sox problems in previous games. Mike Timlin is pitching for Red Sox.

Matsui - Strike one just blazes past him. Ball. 1-1. Ball Two. Hits a long one to hit the right field wall but Nixon there so he's only on first.

Alan Embree and Bronson Arroyo are getting loose in the bullpen. Announcers talk too much but here's a bit from them. Yankees only lost 4 games in a row once this past season and Red Sox gave them 3 of those. Red Sox watched the movie "Miracle" in locker room before this game instead of taking batting practice - that's the game where USA wins gold medal against Russian hockey team.

Bernie Williams - Ball one. Time called as a fan tossed a ball on the field. Ball two. 2-0 count. Strike. Ball Three. 3-1. Too close to a walk for my nerves!! Inside corner strike that I thought was a ball but no one else said anything so I guess it really was a strike. Full count. Stupid announcers talk about everything but the game. Williams hits next pitch between 2nd and 1st. They get Matsui out but not a double play, Williams safe on first. 1st Out.
Jorge Posada - Pops up first pitch and he's out. 2nd Out.
Kenny Lofton - Ball One. Williams steals 2nd, but Red Sox let him - fielders indifference. Ball two and it was so far out of zone we're lucky Varitek caught it and kept him on 2nd. 3rd Ball. No strikes yet!!! Base on balls; Lofton's on first.

Terry Franconia is coming in to take out Timlin and bringing in Alan Embree (left hander). Great the National Weather Alert has interrupted with its monthly test - I bet Red Sox fans are screaming at the tv!!!!!!!! Thankfully it came at a pitching change and thankfully the test ends before Embree has his first pitch.

Yankees bring in Ruben Sierra - their power DH! Ground ball to Mark Bellhorn at 2nd and easy toss to get him out at first. The game is over. The stadium is soooo quiet and it is midnight!!

Believe it or not I just ended the e-mail like that, I think I was in shock. It had been a long 7 games and some of my e-mails showed my Red Sox Stress.
